Chicago Greets the Apocalypse

Description

This is part of my collection of past digital art – deviations that I don't consider to be of significant artistic value, but are part of my journey as an artist.

Inspiration
I took this when we got stuck in traffic outside of Chicago. (I blame the Americans.) I leaned up through the front seat and took a picture of the city horizon. I'm not really a city kid so the sight was pretty phenomenal to me.
After the trip, I had no intentions of using the skyline picture for anything. At all, really. I forget how, but I eventually came up with the apocalypse idea. I had a lot of crazy sun/cloud pictures from playing with my camera during the long drive, so that wasn't a problem (and this sky turned out to perfectly frame the buildings).
It was a beautiful let down
When I crashed and burned
When I found myself alone unknown and hurt
It was a beautiful let down
The day I knew
That all the riches this world had to offer me
Would never do

In a world full of bitter pain and bitter doubt
I was trying so hard to fit in, fit in,
Until I found out
I don't belong here
I don't belong here
I will carry a cross and a song where I don't belong
But I don't belong

It was a beautiful let down
When you found me here
Yeah for once in a rare blue moon I see everything clear
I'll be a beautiful let down
That's what I'll forever be
And though it may cost my soul
I'll sing for free
We're still chasin our tails and the rising sun
And our dark water planet's
Still spinning in a race
Where no one wins and no one's won

This manipulation was definitely one of the bigger projects that I've done, but I think it was worth it in the end.

Technique
You hopefully can't tell, but the sky has been added in. To copy it in, I had to separate the sky and city horizon into different layers. Doing that took about an hour and a half, because I had to go along the skyline and draw a line along the edge, at x400 magnification. So I did that, merged in the apocalyptic sky, and continued to manipulate the tones. Which takes a long time. Oh, and the last thing I added in was the plane going down. It was really going up when I took the picture, but I flipped it.

I did that process about five times. The first time, I only did the first part. And when I saved it, the layers were merged, without my knowledge. And when I did complete the process completely, and was completely happy with it, the file disappeared off of my computer! :noes: Bad things kept happening.

 Unbelievable, eh? Anyway, there's how dedicated I am to my art. I was just so determined.

I completed the first version of this and uploaded it, and a couple of months later I was contacted by a Dutch thrash metal band, Engine of Pain, asking if I would be willing to do some graphic design for them. It sounds absurd, I know. But anyway, I revamped this manipulation (technically my first ever commission, even though I wasn't being paid) and we worked on a couple of small projects together. Fun times.

this will be used as wallpaper on my blog.

I'll put a link I promise!

Very nice work, it looks so real.

I never did a critique before, it's pretty hard for me.

Uhm, vision: Look like a photograph. Absolutely speechless view.

Originality: A city + Apocalypse = Always original to me. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>

Technique: How did you do that?

Impact: I really feel like your picture is real. Awesome <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>

To be honest, it's the best I can give to you, I'm not a super artist who know all about art, I was looking for a post-apocalyptic picture that I can feel the chaos but not to much... it's not frightening it is awesome!

by the way I'm french <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/> sorry for my english.
