The inspiration: This song has some pretty clear allusions to church. Almost all of the lyrics could be called religious, but it doesn't seem to be a religious song, really. Manchester Orchestra is like that – they've got a unique style to everything they do.

There's two main aspects to the song that inspired this picture. First of all, yeah, the church. I wanted to take a picture of something church-related. But I wanted it to be a bit strange, to fit the song. Something that you wouldn't normally see. The other part is the last two lines: Now that you're home won't you rescue me? / I've been trying so hard to be good again. I planned this shot to be something like that candle burning on the windowsill. Waiting for someone.

It's hard to explain.

The technique: I was at my church for a meeting, so when it was over I brought my camera and tripod outside across the street. Middle of winter, middle of the night. Yeah, this was excruciatingly cold.
