Project 52, week 11
[my theme]
The song: Tony the Tiger (view the music video here)
The lyrics:
I was alone,
So I set a fire and I wasted it all on you.
You were a sea I cannot remember,
And I knew it'd be over soon.
If I was a tree I know you couldn't take it
On a Sunday afternoon.
And we were a bridge on top of bodied water
With something left inside you.

What is the price to be a bargain beggar,
So lonely but always free.
What did you mean when you said it's destructive
And you sank yourself right into me.
I know you think you know
But you probably don't.
And I know you think you know
But you probably don't know.

Do you think that you would actually do it?
Do you think that you would actually do it?

And you slept the entire drive home;
It was you my sister and I.
And you slept the entire drive home;
It was you my sister and I.

Do you think that you would actually do it?
Do you think that you would actually do it?

Do you think that you would actually do it?
Do you think that you would actually do it?
The inspiration: I was really intrigued by the first verse of the song. I've listened to the song many times over but I still can't figure out what that bit – or much else of the song – means. I really wish I could sit down with Andy Hull and discuss his lyrics.

I've found that photographing songs is helpful in understanding the lyrics so for this song I decided I wanted to take a shot of something directly expressed in the song. Although I was intrigued by the image of the "sea I cannot remember," the tree or the beggar, my resources are, unfortunately, rather limited. I didn't have those things at my house.

But I did have fire. :eyes: After thinking for a while, assessing my options, I went and grabbed some playing cards that I'd tossed aside several weeks ago when I frustratedly realized that too many cards were missing to take a picture of a royal flush or something artistic like that. If I can't use them, why not set them on fire?

I focused on the the hearts cards – of which I had the jack, queen and ace in the hopes that their theme would match the song accordingly.

The technique: This shot was a little less complicated than Do you remember? but definitely more dangerous. :dummy: And really it took maybe twice as long.

Basically, the setup was a piece of plywood sitting on my dining room table with my tripod over top of it and a playing card taped to the edge – which I would carefully set on fire. I started with the less-interesting cards – three of diamonds, six of spades, etc. – and practiced/experimented with how close I should hold the match, what angle it should be on and all of those variables. And I burned my finger really badly. :|

All of the finesse was in the setup and post-editing: the actual shooting was just me holding the shutter on rapid-fire while the card burned. Speaking of editing, it took me multiple hours to get this digitally altered the way I wanted. Either I'm really dedicated or I just really suck at this. :faint:

when i first looked at this photo, i wondered why in its simplicity did it strike me so intriguing.
maybe it was the fact that the darkness was so black, or because the flame perched on the shoulder of the jack? maybe because i found it odd that the jack, a representation of the ordinary man was the one burning and not a king or queen?

or was it the fact that despite the burning flames, the jack cannot and will not turn away?

and thus, i realized that this image is much more than a card burning.. it is a reminder to carry on and persevere through life's challenges, even if it means you get "burned" along the way.

you really are freakin' awesome and tyvm for sharing it. (:

I like this, Jon. And I've liked it for a while, now. But I think I can finally articulate why I like it so much. I like it because it is the image of love and the fire of passion entwined, as they avert our eyes from the darkness. I like it because it is the image of the fire of sacrifice, and because it is the image of the heroic knight as he is crucified to the void. I like it because his face is the image of bemused and benevolent courage. I like it because the fire is caressing his shoulder like a long lost friend. I like it because the darkness is just less than black, showing us that maybe we can penetrate the darkness to see the far green country behind it.

And I like it because it is a beautiful image. Figuring out how to capture it would have required great cognitive dexterity, and actually making it work reveals a great deal of technical ability.

I've had it on my desktop for a few days, and its been inspiring.
