Project 52, week 8
[my theme]
The song: Window (listen to it on YouTube here)
The lyrics:
If you could roll the window down,
I'm feeling crowded, and getting real nauseous.
If you could take the forcefield down
I swear I'm trying to make conversation.
If I could let my hair grow out,
then I could prove that I'm not so impulsive.
If I could let my feelings out,
then I could show you that I have been thinking
that we'd have gotten farther if we never even started at all.

I'll meet you for coffee, let's say four.
That way it's crowded and less complicated.
Let's try and get this over now.
I've set the setting of great mass destruction.
If we're trying, we can strum things down.
I just don't think I have got this left in me.
If I try and tell you in words now
how much I need you and know I'll be sorry.
'Cause we'd have gotten farther if we never even started at all.
[If you could roll that window down...
If you could roll that window down...]
'Cause we'd have gotten farther if we never even started at all.
'Cause we'd have gotten farther if we never even started at all.
'Cause we'd have gotten farther if we never even started.
The inspiration: I feel like this song focuses a lot on a person developing a sense of identity and a relationship with someone else. That might seem like a stretch to you, but it's what I get out of the lyrics. All of the "if" phrases are about how to express your internal identity to another person – like "If I could let my hair grow out / then I could prove that I'm not so impulsive." There seems to be a reluctance in this song, to let the feelings out. Like they're shy or something. But at the same time, they're trying to build a relationship. It's a bit of a story in lyrical, albeit somewhat mysterious, form.

What this song made me think of was starting university. There's a lot of uncertainty and self-analysis. As well as, of course, the relationship building. And making new friends becomes a lot harder when you get older. Like, it's not just whoever has the coolest Beyblades anymore. Maybe I just made this connection because I've been thinking a lot about university lately, I don't know. The picture is of me, of course, and it's supposed to represent a difficult choice that will define my future. You can see from where I've come, and the split that depends on my choice. I don't really feel like it needs that much explanation.

The really haunting line, in this context, is "we'd have gotten farther if we never even started at all." There's always that risk that I'll regret my choice, or I'll waste my time on something not worthwhile. (Although, to be honest, I'm not that worried about it. No regrets, baby.)
I took this picture as an art trade for my friend, ~CityAcrylics. I really hope we end up going to the same university, because as much as he exasperates me at times, he's a really fantastic guy and he can always make me laugh. If we don't go to the same university, I know I'll really miss him but the idea of this shot is that it doesn't matter what route he takes – he'll be a success in the end. Even if he'll never believe me, I believe it enough for the both of us.
The technique: This shot took a long time to get. I had to individually draw each of those arrows and completely remove everything from my dining room because I wasn't sure how wide of an angle I was going to do. The outfit took a long time to decide on (almost all of my clothes were taken out of closet and considered).

And then actually shooting this was arduous process. I had my camera set to 10 second timer and had to keep running back and forth, making little modifications.
