Project 52, week 22
[my theme]
The song: Goodbye to the Liars (listen to it on YouTube here)
The lyrics:
We strolled the streets a seven scene
and found ourselves right underneath the lights of the city,
and man did she look pretty and her eyes caught mine and it was just like heaven.
Robert Smith will write the score to all of my defeats,
when every friday I'm in love but Thursday just repeats,
And I almost believed you were sorry.

The love you allowed is screamin' out the songs that she would die without.
Yesterday she promised me she'd love me always.
Me and you both know she's a liar.

And say goodnight to the cheaters,
as we softly kiss them again;
the tide's looking quite high again.

Well I gave up on love and I gave up on dying,
but somehow since then my heart has been cryin'
and I don't think that this can be very healthy.

So pass me the tab I'll pay full tonight,
and as long as she's fine then I'll be alright.
Just make sure that he treats you as well as I did.

And say goodnight to the cheaters,
as we softly kiss them again;
the tide's looking quite high again.

Say goodnight to the liars,
as they all sleep alone in their beds.
It's a good night my moonlight friends.

And all the young boys, and all the young girls
are playing love's game and running in circles,
and pretty soon they're gonna get sick and they're all gonna cry.

But love is a trip and my bags are packed,
so when do I leave? am I coming back?
and I really think that I'd rather go ahead and stay home.

And say goodnight to the cheaters,
as we softly kiss them again;
the tide's looking quite high again.

Say goodnight to the liars,
as they all sleep alone in their beds.
It's a good night my moonlight friends.
The inspiration: When I first heard the lyric, "and man ... like heaven" I really, really wanted to create that moment, you know? But I figured, where am I going to find two models willing to help me? And how will I possibly create a real enough moment? In short, I knew what I wanted to create but had my doubts that I could do it. Then when I saw these statuettes on the fence outside my family's garden, I thought of this song. Then, of course, there's the line about kissing. You know, Manchester Orchestra has written a lot of songs about love, but relatively few of them include any sort of kissing. Maybe you can't see it from this angle, but the two statuettes are supposed to be kissing each other.

The reference to, "all the young boys and all the young girls," is perfect for this photo. They're actually a nice couple of figurines.

The technique: I was initially planning on just a shot of the two of them kissing, but when I got outside, I noticed the spider's web that had been built between them. I've always wanted to take a picture of a spiderweb with dewdrops on it, so I thought, here's my chance. Only problem was, there was no dew or mist or anything. Resourceful me, I went and grabbed a spray bottle from my mother's bonsai tree, and a desk lamp along with it, because I knew the water droplets wouldn't show up very well without more direct light. Then I had to get an extension cord and all that sort of thing to set up my shot.

I took most of my photos from the other side of the fence, focusing on the girl because I figured it fit the song better, but then I went to the other side on a completely different angle (way lower), and was immediately enraptured by the way the light hit the web. So I added more water, adjusted my light and grabbed this shot.

Cute fact: behind both of their backs, they're holding a present – the boy, some flowers, and the girl, chocolates. :]
