The Glory of the Skies by jonathoncomfortreed The Glory of the Skies by jonathoncomfortreed
Inspiration
I took this picture in August on the west coast of Newfoundland. We stayed in a harbour for a night before heading into the Long Range mountains for our hiking trip so we were right on the coast for one of the most glorious sunsets of the trip. I was thrilled.

There's not much of an inspiration story for this shot, though. I mean, we were on the coast, there was a sunset. It was inevitable that I'd head down to the water. Who wouldn't?

Technique
I used my 18mm lens and panned a bit to get the dimensions of this shot, and then stitched them together on the computer. I took several panoramas of this sunset, and at some point switched to shooting in monochrome. I honestly couldn't tell you what made me switch. I've done a couple of sunsets in monochrome, just out of curiosity, and I've always found the change in intensity rather striking. With black and white photos, you don't have the complexity of different colours blending, so (in my opinion) the tones become a lot more intense. I always miss the colour dynamic a little bit, but to be honest the greyscale has some fantastic aspects to it.

For this shot, the sun was already set, really, so the colours had become relatively muted. The colour shots are still pretty cool, but I didn't feel like they were as powerful as the monochrome.

My favourite part of this shot is definitely the contrail on the left. It's almost like a shooting star. Love it.

Really nice – I love how wide the picture is, the sky looks like it's exploding everywhere. Which sounds kind of sinister, but I mean it in a good way, honest. :XD: Love the peacefulness of the photo.
