ResilienceWhen I was young, I loved to watch my father work. I used to think sparks were dangerous, so I would sit far enough away that the fire could not reach me. But I could still feel the heat, watching sparks rise high into the smoky air.

I was terrified of darkness. I would sleep with a candle burning to protect me, but shadows invaded my dreams. I pretended I was a dragon, filled with flames. Fearless.

Defiant.

No one believes in dragons anymore. No one believes in fire, either. I've grown up into the age of electricity, where fire is too hot and too wild to touch. Why risk burning yourself when light and heat are ready at the flip of a switc

Dreams Like Smoke        I'm a burnt-out boy with a broken guitar and three wishes to spare. I sleep with them under my pillow and try to dream of happiness. But I know that you'll disappear if I open my eyes. So I told you I thought I loved you but you just looked at me with those eyes and said

Fighting for Love        Isn't it funny how a girl can mean so much to a boy? They call it romantic. Not age thirteen, at age thirteen, it's not love, it's biology; let someone test their blood and tell them they're fine. But these are just kids: they know little about biology and less about love. That's the way it always is. You learn a lot and lose even more, but don't tell that to the boys in this story. They don't know that.

Sleepless NightsMy bloodshot eyes are stained with black, circled by dark rings of sleepless nights and smudged ink. I have a permanent headache, my mind singing bloody hymns with battered rhythm and broken voice; my failing vision clouded by smoke and cracked glass.

Words leak out of my skull, seeping like black tar; they burn my skin like the sting of elusive flames. I have broken promises tattooed on my chest.
And this is how it feels to have your imagination chained to your heart.

I lower my ink-stained hand to ravaged paper, and words trickle out of my veins.

He's on his way home from school, happily clutching a big blue birthday candle.
His mom looks at him lovingly, "Happy birthday."

The car spins out of control and he screams. His mom grits her teeth and slams her foot on the brake pedal. A truck speeds towards them, horn blaring, but it's too late; she reaches for him and cries, "I love —"

When he wakes up from the coma, she's already gone.

"— you," his dad whispers angrily, cheeks wet with tears.
The boy starts to tremble in his hospital bed. "Dad?"
"Why are you alive, when she's —" his dad's voice breaks, "she's —"
"I'm cold," his voice is barely above a whimp

It Was Always You It was a beautiful clearing. I bent and picked a brilliant red flower from the long still grasses and set it in my hair. It was peaceful. But kind of lonely, just another reminder of all the differences from back home. Across the country and all. My mom said I’d meet new friends, but so far, she was wrong. I sighed and sat with my back against a large oak tree.
I’d just begun to read my book when I hard the sound of muffled laughter from the branches above me. I looked up in alarm to see a face peering down at me from the leafy canopy.

Inspiration
The inspiration to make this piece was really the photograph itself. I hadn't seen this photo in a long time; I was going through an old album one day and realized this was a great shot with which to practice editing colour dynamics and typography. Well I did more than practice, if I may say so myself

– this was, in my opinion, the first [good] typography piece that I made.

The phrase "the horizon is waiting" means a lot to me because it speaks of wanderlust, exploration and vast potential. I love wide open spaces, I love the sky and wherever the wind can take me.

Technique
I took this photo absurdly early in the morning in Gaspé, Québec (same morning as Apollo's realm). My favourite thing about the sky's composition that morning was the contrasting colours depending on how close to the horizon you look.

I like this shot because it reaches all the way down the bay towards the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean. When I look at it I feel like I'm going to fall headfirst into the world.

That's beautiful. The colors look great, the angle is lovely, and the depth is really good as well. I'm not sure the water mark appeals to me, but the message is really nice.
